For Hairstylists – Here are some statistics:

• Studies have shown that infertility and spontaneous miscarriages are highest among hairstylists over women in any other occupation.
• One Swedish study, surveying over 1 million women, concluded that pharmaceutical careers and cosmetologists carry the highest increased risks of breast cancer of any occupation. The American Journal of Epidemiology concluded that hairstylists have 3x the risk of developing breast cancer when working with hair color for 5+ years.
• 7 out of 10 hairstylists will suffer from work related dermatitis at some point in their career.
• 1 in 5 hairstylists will suffer an illness directly related to their occupation.

An investigation of 1500 people with bladder Cancer in California found that women who used permanent hair dyes including PPD were twice as likely to get the disease. UK Cancer Council announced research showing that people who color their hair with PPD are 15% more likely to get breast cancer.

In fact, a group of European dermatologists noted that as more young people color their hair, the incidence of hair dye allergies is on the rise. Patients with severe reactions suffer from painful rashes around the hair line or on the face. Facial swelling is also common. Some reactions are so serious that you may be hospitalized.

Resorcinol is classified as a hazardous chemical. Inhalation can cause abdominal pain, nausea, and unconsciousness. If it gets on your skin (or your scalp), it causes redness and pain. It’s also considered hazardous to the environment, as it dissolves easily and may infiltrate waterways, presenting hazards to fish and other aquatic life. (So this means when your stylists dumps extra hair color down the drain, it can affect water ways.)

The dangers of resorcinol are more serious than perceived. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), animal studies show that resorcinol caused thyroid dysfunction, effects on the central nervous system, and alterations in the adrenal glands. The organization found that the ingredient was highly toxic after oral or subcutaneous (under the skin) administration. Finally, the WHO added that resorcinol can cause sensitization, which means that frequent use can lead to sensitivities resulting in allergic reactions (-also why we have guests with scalp irritations).

Ammonia is a corrosive substance known to cause health issues, such as irritation of the skin, respiratory tract, lungs, and esophageal passage. One of the most common health issues amongst hair stylists are respiratory and breathing issues. These complications are attributed to the presence of ammonia in hair color and formaldehyde found in many popular keratin treatments.

• Long-term exposure to ammonia fumes can cause depression and social anxiety disorder.
• Daily exposure to ammonia can cause high blood pressure, pulmonary edema, and bronchitis.
• Continued contact with ammonia hydroxide will dry the skin and damage skin cells and eventually cause serious skin complications.
• Exposure to ammonia fumes can damage eyes, liver, kidneys, and lungs.
