For some people, organic is life. For others, organic is the small section in the produce aisle where the prices are suddenly 50 times higher than the seemingly identical fruit in the non-organic section.
For your hair, though, it’s something to seriously consider. Although a case could be made for why regular shampoos are the way to go (they’re often cheaper than the organic option, and they’re always readily available in most stores), the cons definitely outweigh the pros. Without totally freaking you out; more than 50% of what you apply to your skin gets absorbed into your body. With this in mind, you might want to think twice before you massage “ammonium laurel sulphate”, “sodium laureate sulphate”, “polyethylene glycol” and other things we can’t pronounce into your scalp. Not to mention a lot of the harsh chemical ingredients in non-organic shampoos have actually been associated with causing cancer and other not-so-nice health conditions, not to mention baldness, premature greying and hair loss.
Here’s a list of just a few of the most common regular shampoo ingredients, including those mentioned above:
Ammonium laurel sulphate & sodium laureate sulphate: These are harsh detergents used for their “foaming” properties, but they strip your hair of the natural oils that it needs to stay healthy, which in turn halts it’s growth.
Polyethylene Glycol: This is a thickening agent that strips hair and skin of it’s natural moisture.
Parbens: A chemical used to prolong shelf life, but it’s a common skin irritant and constant exposure to certain parabens is known to affect your hormonal balance which can cause hair loss.
Propylene Glycol. Also known as antifreeze. Propylene Glycol is a common ingredient in shampoos, used to keep the product from freezing during shipping and storage. It goes without saying that it can irritate skin, and cause allergic reactions.
Now, hopefully we haven’t scared you into never washing your hair again. The other side of the coin, organic shampoos and conditioners, are much more appealing and much less scary. At Trim Hair Salon, we love love love the brands Intelligent Nutrients, and Natulique.
Intelligent Nutrients promises no parabens, no silicones, no chemical sulphates, and no synthetic fragrances. Not only are all of their hair products gluten free, vegan, and never animal tested, they contain amazing anti-aging antioxidants and 100% all natural ingredients. So natural in fact, that most of the ingredients they use are food grade! I’d rather wash my hair with something I can eat than with antifreeze. Take for example their Harmonic Shampoo. It’s completely ideal for every hair type and works naturally to cleanse and purify your hair, scalp and body. Did I mention it’s also a volumizing shampoo? It’s the full package, without any of the nasty chemicals.
